Baptism

Our Lord tied the forgiveness of sins to faith and Baptism.... Baptism is the first and chief sacrament of forgiveness of sins because it unites us with Christ, who died for our sins and rose for our justification, so that "we too might walk in newness of life." (CCC 977).

Life in the Sacraments - Baptism

Baptism is one of the seven sacraments, the "door" which gives access to all the others. It is the first and chief sacrament of forgiveness because it unites us with Christ, who died for our sins and rose for our justification. The first of the three "sacraments of initiation," baptism remits original sin and incorporates the believer into the Church, the Body of Christ.
